How social media will have a impact on mental illnesses and friendships in the year 2030.

Social media has had a negative impact on people who suffer from mental health, anxiety, depression, and especially body image. Social media tends to negatively affect those who suffer with the following mental health issues due to the fact that we are continuously comparing ourselves to those who seem to “have it all”. Part of the reason Facebook makes people feel socially isolated (even though they may not actually be) is the comparison factor. We fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as we scroll through our feeds and make judgements about how we measure up (Walton, 2017).
Social media allows us to portray ourselves as confident and somebody who seems to have themselves “together”. This is simply due to the fact that we can change the perception on our lives, we create a false image for those around us. We may not even realize it, but those around us are comparing themselves to our lives. Through social media, people tend to compare their wealth, beauty, health and achievements.
By the year 2030, mental health caused by social media will probably have caused extreme cases of anxiety, depression, and body image issues. Social media continues to evolve every day, causing us to find new ways to compare ourselves to those around us. We seem to find ourselves online for hours a day, increasing anxiety and depression. If we continue to build our anxiety, depression, and decrease our body image, we will find ourselves becoming less social and more attracted to the media portion rather than continuing to keep up with friendships. We have to take much needed breaks from social media, we will be less likely to find ourselves in a mental health epidemic. Only a couple hours a day without social media will allow us to focus on our own self-image, self-worth and self-goals rather than comparing ourselves to those online.

SOCIAL MEDIA AS A PLATFORM FOR SOCIALIZATION FOR SOCIAL INHIBITS AND THE FORMING OF FRIENDSHIPS IN 2030

SOCIAL MEDIA AS A PLATFORM FOR SOCIALIZATION FOR SOCIAL INHIBITS AND THE FORMING OF FRIENDSHIPS IN 2030 Written by: Valéria Santos On our last posts, we’ve been discussing about some challenges of interpersonal communication in online contexts and relationship development. We’ve talked about how the lack of non-verbal cues prevent users from experiencing a sense of the other, which may impact the forming of strong bonds and relationships. We’ve also discussed that the lack of cues on social media leads to more frequent misunderstandings and conflicts and that the lack of empathy also affects adjusting behaviour and influences sustaining friendships in online contexts. However, while writing about these topics, I’ve also come across some articles addressing how social media can be a platform for socialization and how people who are more timid or who have a more introverted personality feel more comfortable and less intimidated while interacting in online settings. As ...

HOW THE RELATIONSHIPS OF FRIENSHIP ARE CHANGING WITH THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA. HELPING US EXTEND OUR WORLD TOWARDS 2030

HOW THE RELATIONSHIPS OF FRIENSHIP ARE CHANGING WITH THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA. HELPING US EXTEND OUR WORLD TOWARDS 2030 Written by: Shamninder Sahota The Trends in the use of social media have changed the friendship dynamics  amongst our youth already and it will still be impacting friendships in 2030. The evolution of social media has given our youth the opportunity to be able to extend and choose to connect with people all over the world according to their objects of attention, “ object of attention : adolescents can select whom they listen to and whom they address” (Chambers, 2018, p.85, para.2). The youth today is able to take an informed decision on extending their social circle outside of their schools and close proximity area, called Hangout spots  “ The social interactions occurring at school spill over and extend into social media contexts and then extend back to offline spaces. As a consequence, online and offline friendship-driven practices cannot be...

OUR ONLINE IDENTITIES IN SOCIAL MEDIA AND FRIENDSHIP IN 2030

OUR ONLINE IDENTITIES IN SOCIAL MEDIA AND FRIENDSHIP IN 2030 Written by Fernanda Araya Our online identities have a massive impact on our everyday lives nowadays since being connected during a big part of our day is the new normal. Creating an online version of ourselves that, most of the time, is an improved version of the real us, doesn’t seem to generate any questions as it seems that everyone does it. The change has been progressive, and it seems that younger generations are the ones that enjoy this type of exposure on social media. According to ESPAS, “the intense frequency with which people actively engage with their smartphones […] creates constant exposure to wide public approval or judgment and instantaneous feedback loop that affects how individuals present and define themselves to others” (ESPAS, 2018). Looking for constant approval creates anxiety, stress and low self-esteem in people since they are continuously trying to please others. Their virtual ident...
